Create a career transition plan

A transition feels less overwhelming when it is broken into clear stages. Use this roadmap as a guide — move at the pace your situation allows.

1. Understand where you are now

  • How stable is your current role, and how much time do you have?
  • What are your financial needs and limits?
  • What are your strongest skills and accomplishments?

2. Choose a direction

Pick one main target — a role, a field or a type of work. You can adjust later, but a clear direction makes every next step easier.

3. Identify skill gaps

  • Compare a few real job postings for your target with your experience
  • Note the two or three skills that appear most often that you don’t yet have
  • Choose practical ways to build them: short courses, projects or on-the-job stretch work

4. Update your resume and profile

Rewrite your resume and professional profile for the direction you chose. Lead with results and transferable skills, and use the language your target roles use.

5. Build proof of your skills

Where it fits your field, create something you can show: a small project, a portfolio sample, a certification or a measurable result at work.

6. Research target roles and employers

  • Learn which employers hire for your target and what they value
  • Understand typical pay ranges and requirements

7. Network and apply

  • Reach out to people already doing the work you want
  • Ask for conversations and advice, not just job leads
  • Apply in focused batches rather than sending generic applications everywhere

8. Track your progress

Keep a simple record of applications, conversations, skills learned and follow-ups. It shows you what’s working and keeps momentum going.

9. Adjust as things change

Your situation, your industry and your goals may shift. Review your plan every few weeks and adjust the direction, pace or steps as needed.

A good plan isn’t one you follow perfectly — it’s one you keep updating as you learn.
